QUICK TIPS FOR A NEW SPL

1. Get a clipboard.

2. Write down the things you need to do/make a list (you can't remember everything).

3. Personally set the example (behavior, uniform, attendance, being on time) and see that your PLC does also.

o        You should be the first scout to arrive at Troop meetings and the last to leave.

4. Follow-up with your ASPL & PLs to make sure the right things are getting done.

5. On campouts:

o        Get (and keep) an accurate record of the Scouts.

o        Ensure that the Service & Program Patrols are doing their job.

o        Review Campout Itinerary with your Troop on Friday evening and then hang it so everyone can see it.

o        Check that the Patrol Leaders have posted their Duty Rosters.

o        Be the first up in the morning.

o        Say goodnight to the young Scouts and see that they are alright.

6. Ask for help, the SPL should never be rejected by Scouts or Scoutmaster.

7. Don't let the Scoutmaster (or another adult) do your job - if they inadvertently try to move the Scouts, or make an announcement to the troop, or something else that is your responsibility; politely take him to the side and let him know that is your job!  Then be sure you do it!
